This is the Chernobyl Dice: a Cold War era themed quantum RNG. It uses the clicks of a Geiger counter nestled next to an array of uranium glass marbles to generate random bits displayed on Nixie tubes.

This is a *disgustingly fair* dice and I’ve run the tests to prove it, lol

There are so many more important things to work out before quote tweets. IMO it’s engagement-hungry people who want them. “Look at me disagreeing with this post someone else made! Please agree with me.” Yeah we all did it back on Twitter because remember this, the platform was designed to get us to engage by disagreeing with things and hopefully getting mad enough to type words about it.

I have just learned that I have been laid off, three days before Christmas.

I have a lot of emotions right now, but instead of airing those out I'm focusing in a more positive direction. I am looking for a full-stack engineer or back-end/front-end developer position in the information security space. I am proficient in Python, JavaScript (React, Node, Express mainly) and am getting proficient in Rust. I have my GIAC Reverse Engineering Malware (GREM) certification and am comfortable in a systems engineering role with Rust or C/C++ as well.

Contract work welcome, full-time employment preferred. Appreciate the support and hope your holidays are off to a better start than mine!

This is the first time in ~17 yrs that the majority of the people in my network are talking to each other in public via an open protocol on community-run servers rather than a startup's service.

It's really nice to have gotten here, in a way that's entwined not only with nostalgic feelings, but also their optimistic underpinnings that were the reason I was interested in all this in the first place.

I guess this was it, for Twitter? I'm sorry to see it go. From my limited viewpoint it seems like a big exodus is happening. More than half of my timeline is posting about leaving.

Note that Paul Graham did not break the new, ridiculous and draconian policy of not being allowed to mention handles on other social media sites. Suspended, none the less. Even though his first post here, on Mastodon was expressing how he’s rooting for Elon Musk and Twitter, and just taking a temporary break.
All of this feels just as petty as how Musk treated Twitter’s software engineers. I don’t feel welcome on Twitter any more.

Twitter just locked my account after I asked Twitter's head of Trust & Safety Ella Irwin why I haven't been informed of what tweet broke Twitter's policies

Seems they forgot to force me to delete the tweet the first time, like they did the other suspended journalists.

Please stop cross-posting your twitter feed automatically to Mastodon. When you cross-post but never engage with your Mastodon followers, you're treating this as a syndication platform rather than a community. It comes off arrogant, and it clutters the timeline.

Looks like the WSJ is going all in on moving to Mastodon, with this little tutorial available without a paywall.

Tired: Tech writers dumping on Mastodon without having ever used it

Wired: Political writers inventing a founder for Mastodon because they can’t read #JohnMastodon

Can we just reflect on how some journalists are struggling with the concept of a social media network without a "Guy In Charge of It All" so much that one of them made up a guy?

How will they write about the King of Mastodons feuding with The King of the Twitters?

I'm starting to realize just how unaware many people must be of the remarkable things happing right now to social media.

So Elon is reinstating the accounts of journos he banned last night and some of them appear relieved to be “back.” That is all fine but imho Elon’s actions crossed another line last night. It’s tragic to see some of these journos sound so “relieved” to be back there. By doing that they are bending their knees to a billionaire 🤡 drunk on power.
Elon’s actions are providing an opportunity for us to build an healthier civic online space for our democrac. Would be good for us to take it. #fediverse

A few words on alternative platforms you might be considering:

- Tumblr: still exists, now run by Automattic, the WordPress crew -- decent folks. Not my kind of thing but seems to have found its niche, might even interoperate with Mastodon some day.

- Cohost: good vibe, good people, feels small-scale Tumblr-ish. Run by a "not-for-profit software company".

- Post.news: funded by early Twitter investor Andreessen Horowitz. Nonsense micropayment scheme. Avoid.

- Hive: security nightmare. Avoid.
